Phillipsburg, the county seat of Phillips
[PL] County, is located at the intersection of US
Hwy. 36 and US Hwy. 183. Phillipsburg was named for
politician and Civil War colonel William A. Phillips. Phillips
County was named for another William Phillips, a Free-State
supporter who was murdered September 1, 1856.
In the Spring of 1873, the
Army sent word from Fort Hays that an attack
by Apaches was imminent. Phillipsburg's Fort
Bissell was hastily built but it was never needed.
Old
Fort Bissell, now located in a Phillipsburg
park, offers a visit to a frontier community.
Phillipsburg
is the home of the McDill
"Huck" Boyd Community Center.
Named in honor of the long-time publisher of
the Phillips County Review, the center offers
concerts and other live entertainment, as well
as a regional convention facility. Inside the
Center, you'll find the C&R Railroad Museum,
an amazing layout of Lionel model trains.
The gently rolling countryside around the city
offers many opportunities for outdoor recreation.
The Kirwin
National Wildlife Refuge and the Kirwin
Reservoir make the area around Phillipsburg
famous for its goose hunting and bird watching.
The Phillipsburg area also offers opportunities
for water skiing, golfing, fishing, and hunting.
Phillipsburg
celebrates its "Riverless" Festival the first weekend in June. The
Phillips
County Fair is held the last week of
July in conjunction with "Kansas'
Biggest Rodeo" on the first Saturday
of August. The rodeo parade through downtown
Phillipsburg is a fun-filled event for the family.
Phillipsburg
has a diverse economy. In addition to the strong
agricultural base, there is manufacturing. Phillipsburg's
Kyle Railroad, which connects the area to the
transcontinental lines, is also headquartered
here. A central location, low tax base, competitive
utility rates, progressive local and county
governments, and a strong work ethic make Phillipsburg
an ideal location for commerce.
